What is required to vote?
Your name must be in the precinct book where you are attempting to vote.

How do I get my name in the precinct book?
You must fill out a voter regristration application.

What is required to fill out a voter registration application?
You must have Cherokee Tribal Membership and be eighteen (18) years old.

Is a voter photo ID required to vote?
No, it is not required.

Why is a voter photo ID being made?
A voter card was a request by the voters during the 1995 election. The former Cherokee Nation Election Commission recommended a card and the Council voted to make a card available due to this voter request.

Where can I get a photo ID?
At the Cherokee Nation Election Services office located to the south of the Tribal Complex in the building formerly occupied by the Gift Shop and Cherokee Gardens.

What is the $5.00 charge?
The voter photo ID is a plastic card similar to a credit card. The first voter photo ID is free. Replacement cards have a replacement charge of $5.00 to cover the cost.

Will voter photo IDs be available at community meetings?
During the next budget year, a mobile voter photo ID module will be purchased to take to community meetings for those who are not able to get to Tahlequah. The dates for community meetings will be published at a later time.

What is the status of the Election Law?
The Election Law was revised and approved by a majority vote of the Council of the Cherokee Nation on May 12, 1997.

What about absentees?
Absentee ballots must be requested for new elections. If you request an absentee for a primary election, you will automatically get an absentee for the runoff. At the next new election you must request an absentee again.

When can I request an absentee for the 1999 election?
February 1, 1999 until April 9, 1999

What information do I need to send to get an absentee?
Under the Election Law, the request for absentee must be in writing and shall have the following information:
Name (Printed or typed)
Date of Birth
Address
Cherokee Nation Membership registration number (Blue Card #)
Signature
Phone Number-Optional, but helpful if available.

DATES TO REMEMBER FOR THE 1999 ELECTION
February 1-10, 1999 Candidates may file for office (Business Days)
February 1 until April 9, 1999 Request for Absentee Ballots (Business Days)
March 1, 1999 Voter Registration and voter photo IDs CLOSE for the 1999 election.
MAY 22, 1999 ELECTION
JULY 24, 1999 RUNOFF, if necessary
VOTER REGISTRATION AND VOTER IDS
WILL REOPEN AFTER THE 1999 ELECTION
