Bob Ross (born February 6, 1941) is an American painter, illustrator, and television personality who is best known for his work as a painter and illustrator of children’s books and children’s television programs. Ross was born in 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and educated at the University of the Arts in London. He began his career as a painter of caricatures and cartoons, but soon developed a more serious style, painting landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. In the late 1960s, Ross began to produce children’s books, many of which were published by Random House. In the early 1970s, he began to produce children’s television programs, including The Bob Ross Show, Masterpiece Theatre, and The Great American Birdman. Ross has won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Painter in 1978, the Golden Globe Award for Best Painter in 1981, and the Grammy Award for Best Painter of Children’s Television in 1984. He is also a member of the National Academy of Design.
